On this page I will compile quotations from my sources about why they dance, what dance means to them, and how it affects their life.
“I dance because when I’m dancing, I feel limitless. There is technique and there are specific ways of doing things, but at the same time, it’s possible to everyone to dance. It’s a way of expression and you never stop growing.”
–Lauren Creger, freshman psychology major and Orchesis dance company member
“Dance is very therapeutic. It’s been a part of my life for so long that I don’t know what I’d do with all my time and energy. I can’t imagine my life without it.”
–Nikki Sullivan, sophomore business major and Orchesis dance company member
“I can’t not dance. It’s who I am. It’s part of how I breathe and how I think and how I digest information and how I communicate.”
–Lisa Deyo, Cal Poly dance teacher
“I dance because it is a way to express myself and a way to escape all the worries of life and just live in the moment–It’s a release for me. It has affected my life by becoming a part of it. I can’t ever see myself completely stopping dance and it has helped me grow as a person– learning not only more about myself but important life lessons along the way too.”
-Alexa Dack, Cal Poly Dance Team dancer
“I dance to get away from all my problems, I forget about everything when I go into dance class. Homework, studying, and all my other stress just flies out the window. It’s also so much a part of me since I have been doing it so long that I don’t think I could ever stop. I don’t just dance to work out or stay in shape, I dance because I need to. I feel incomplete when I haven’t danced in a while. It means the world to me, it’s my escape, it’s my happiness, it teaches me so many things about myself.”
-Tiffany Davids, freshman business major and Orchesis dance company member
“I dance as a way of expressing myself. I started because I loved classical music and wanted to somehow ‘become’ the music. Dancing was the only way I knew how! I can’t imagine life without dance. One reason is because I am very shy- it is my way of speaking. Also, I just love it!”
-Kathryn Morgan, former New York City Ballet soloist
